Rowan Williams

'Life will be more interesting with an Archbishop who loves The Simpsons, thinks Disney is dangerous, writes poetry, prays a lot and is frankly a bit of a holy scruff.'

It's official. Rowan Williams is now Archbishop of Canterbury. Who is he, where will he live, what does he believe? Here's the fish guide.

Rowan Williams legally became 104th Archbishop of Canterbury in a medieval ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in early December.

But becoming an Archbishop is not a quick business – he was nominated last July, elected by the College of Canons of Canterbury in November but will not be enthroned in Canterbury Cathedral until the end of February. At his confirmation as Archbishop he said it was ‘a very humbling thing to be included in this long succession of Archbishops and a very humbling thing to be aware of the trust that has been placed in my hands.’

From AD 597 – with Augustine – until AD2002 – with Rowan – there have been 104 Archbishops of Canterbury, and Dr Williams will now be spiritual leader of 70million Anglicans in 38 Provinces all over the world. These days they get to live in a Palace, although only in a little flat. Fancy a tour?

Of course it was the Welsh who first realised Rowan's greatness and for the last three years he has led the Anglican Church in God's own country

Come to think of it, here is all the biographical information you could ever need about the new Archbish. He is an Anglo-Catholic traditionalist who backs gay and women priests. Alas for Tony Blair, he also likes to do his own thinking and can make a pretty unusual claim to being a cleric of our time: he was 200 yards away in Wall Street when two hijacked passenger jets flew into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre.

In his bookof reflections on September 11th, Last words he writes 'We have had the chance to read the messages sent by passengers on the planes to their spouses and families in the desperate last minutes; and we have seen the spiritual advice apparently given to the terrorists by one of their number, the thoughts that should have been in their minds as they approached the death they had chosen (for themselves and for others).’

Dr Williams will have his work cut out holding together all the disparate – and sometimes warring – elements within worldwide Anglicanism - even when he joined the Gorsedd of the Bards at the National Eisteddfod in Wales, his more conservative opponents immediately accused him of dabbling in paganism, just for wearing funny clothes! But life will be more interesting with an Archbishop who loves The Simpsons, thinks Disney is dangerous, writes poetry, prays a lot and is frankly a bit of a holy scruff.
