'CAP not only provides a solution for a client’s financial situation but offers a holistic service with the ultimate desire being that clients eventually become Christians.'

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a national debt counselling charity offering a unique and comprehensive solution to anyone in debt.

The charity operates through 30 debt counselling centres joined in partnership with local churches over the UK. Centre Managers provide home visits, in-depth debt counselling, practical budgeting, negotiation with creditors and debt repayment and insolvency services. CAP also offers a CAP Account which acts as a simple bank account.

The client pays the total of their priority and secondary creditors’ bills into the account which is then distributed on their behalf. This simplifies the budget by turning multiple priority payments into one. It ensures priority payments are made first and smoothes over irregular payments. CAP can therefore provide a solution to anyone regardless of how desperate their situation.

CAP not only provides a solution for a client’s financial situation but offers a holistic service with the ultimate desire being that clients eventually become Christians. All debt counsellors offer to pray with clients, being sensitive of their response, provide bibles for those who don’t have one, invite clients to church, alpha and fellowship evenings.

Support workers from partner churches play a key role in this. Through befriending clients, listening to them and offering practical support such as shopping or gardening, clients are introduced to Christ’s love in a very practical way.

CAP’s personal in-depth service along with practical support offered by the local church has a huge impact upon clients’ lives. Clients thus respond as they learn about Christ’s love and sacrifice for them. From June to August this year 55 clients have become Christians!

CAP has grown considerably over the last 9 years and has been recognised for its achievements by winning the Daily Express Tomorrow’s People Award, the Charity Awards 2003 for ‘management excellence’, the Barclaycard ‘making a difference award’ and short-listed for the Charity Awards 2005 for ‘best practice’.

Because of the incredible impact CAP is having on clients the charity wants to continue growing so they can help more and more people out of debt and introduce them to their love God.

We have a day set aside on Sunday 2nd October to raise awareness of our work in local churches. If you are a local church interested in including a piece on CAP in your service or would be interested in opening a centre please contact on info@capuk.org or 01274 760 726 www.capuk.org for an information pack.

All CAP Sunday packs have leaders’ guides, power-point presentations, video clips, sermon talks of variable sizes and song suggestions to make it as easy as possible for you!
