Pumpkin

'Ghosts will appear at the bottom, and if you get enough of them, they will tell you a very bad joke – scary, eh?'

Hallowe'en is the 31st of October – All Hallows Eve – and is associated with stories of ghosts and spooky goings on, and with parties and dressing up. Here are ten spooky games to play while you ignore the trick-or-treaters. By Suzanne Elvidge.

Small but important print: All games are free downloads or free to view online, and need the minimum of equipment. Some games require your browser to have a 'plug in' for Shockwave, Flash or Java.

To play a game, simply click on its name. If you are a parent, we advise you to try the game and the site it's on first before letting your kids play them, to make sure you're happy.

When downloading games from the Internet, don't forget to keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software up to date.

Scooby Doo Curse of Anubis

Scooby and Shaggy are lost in an Egyptian tomb – help them find their way out before the ghost of Anubis finds them.

Use the arrow keys to move them around the tomb. Find the exit square by moving stone blocks but avoid the sand traps, and use reset if you are stuck. Harder than it looks! If you liked this, try Scooby Doo and the Creepy Castle.

Spooky Splash

Create a spooky aquarium. Click on Shop to start buying things for the aquarium – fish, decorations, and things like lights and pumps. However, this costs money – go to Play to start earning by creating matches of three or more by swapping cards that are next to each other.

The aim is to clear the golden tiles by creating matches above them. Once you have your money, you can start buying – fill up the comfort, beauty and fish meters to earn a cup. Running through the tutorial might help.

Spooky Snap

Use the up arrow on your keyboard to move through the pairs of spooky cards and press the down arrow when you see a pair. Ghosts will appear at the bottom, and if you get enough of them, they will tell you a very bad joke – scary, eh?

Scary Sleepover

Your goal is to make the contestant think he or she is in a haunted house, and to get them out before dawn – set off traps, but use them sparingly. The traps are more effective when the contestant is nearby.

Spooky Switcheroo

Swap the spooky objects around to create lines of three or more that match. You can play a timed game, or play until you are out of moves, and there are hints if you become stuck.

Pumpkin Smash

Your goal is to smash the pumpkins before they fall to the bottom of the screen, but try not to hit any green pumpkins. Toggle weapons with the arrow keys.Use your mouse to control your weapon (waving it madly seems to work…), and left and right arrows will change weapons. You need to hit metal pumpkins extra hard to smash them (obviously!) For more pumpkin games, try Pumpkin Smashing or another Pumpkin Smash game.

Halloween Logic Game

Read the clues and work out who is wearing which costume and eating which sweets! Click in the squares to mark with dots or crosses.

Jack-O-Lantern Logic Game

The aim is to stand all the pumpkin lanterns up at the same time – but when you turn one all the others next to it will reverse. If you get it right, you are more logical than me!

Halloween Costume Dress Up

Click on the options to dress up for a fancy dress party. More games at the Kidz Page.

Yummy Halloween Mahjong

Remove pairs of matching available tiles – tiles must not have another tile on top or on both sides, and they don’t have to be next to each other. Press H for a hint.
