Q. Why is Surefish a real alternative to other broadband providers?
Surefish exists to raise money for Christian Aid, not for shareholders. Christian Aid works tirelessly with projects in some of the world's poorest countries to help people improve their own lives and to tackle the causes of poverty and injustice. Every Surefish user knows that they are contributing money towards this work, simply by doing the everyday activity of using the Internet.

Q. What does 8Mb Broadband mean?
Surefish offers you a fast, reliable broadband connection, through its partner BT Wholesale, part of the group. Using new technology, the service will automatically provide you with the fastest broadband speed your phone line can physically support, up to a maximum of 8Mb (or 8 megabits per second) - up to160 times faster than a standard dial-up connection.

The speed of your broadband connection is affected by many factors, including: how close your house is to the telephone exchange, the length and quality of any phone wiring extensions in your home, whether all your broadband microfilters are correctly installed, the processing speed of your computer and router or modem, the speed of the connection between your computer and modem or router (ethernet and wireless are both faster than USB).

Once set, your maximum broadband speed should remain largely stable, only varying if one of the above factors changes significantly.

Q. How much does Surefish broadband cost?
Our top package costs £23.50 per month, with up to £8* of that monthly fee going to Christian Aid. You get state of the art, super fast broadband, with unlimited downloads, and Christian Aid gets up to £96 per user per year.

For every 10,000 users of surefish broadband, Christian Aid could get up to £960,000*. We also have packages with download limits for £20 per month of which Christian Aid receives around £5* per month.

(* the amount will vary as some costs have to be deducted. Surefish.co.uk is a part of Christian Aid Trading Ltd, the trading arm of Christian Aid, which in 2005/2006 raised more than £500,000 for Christian Aid)

Back to questions

Q. What is meant by unlimited usage?
Surefish provides broadband with no limits as part of its top package. This means that we impose no limits on what can be downloaded. BT’s Fair Usage Policy applies. This includes an explanation of what constitutes acceptable use of the fixed line- and the broadband services, and provides examples of the type of things which are unacceptable. Read our Acceptable Use Policy here.

Back to questions

Q. Will my download speed fluctuate?
The day-to-day download speed you experience over your line is affected by: the time of day ie how busy the telephone network and the internet are (6pm to 9pm being the busiest time, when speed can reduce significantly), the speed of individual websites you are visiting (some have a maximum access speed), whether you're sharing your connection with others in your home, whether any spyware or any other hardware is slowing down your computer.

Although you should have a stable broadband connection after the first hour, the service actually takes a further 10 days to determine and settle at the final optimum speed for your phone line.

During this period you may notice your broadband speed fluctuating. Again, this is a normal characteristic of the service works and not a fault, so during this first 10 day period, we suggest you only call the helpdesk if you experience a total loss of service for more than an hour.
