webspace FAQs
Date:
March 2007
The following questions and answers are for users of surefish email accounts who use the webspace facility to publish a website or websites
The old website addresses,
http://www.YOURNAME.webspace.surefish.co.uk
and http://www.YOURNAME.webspace.surefish.co.uk
no longer operate because the servers that hosted these sites belonged to our former supplier, which has now gone into administration.
Your website address now takes the following form:
http://myspace.surefish.co.uk/~firstname.lastname
e.g. http://myspace.surefish.co.uk/~joe.bloggs (please see additional notes below)
If you previously had a fish.co.uk website, your website also has a myspace.surefish.co.uk prefix.
Because of this change, you will need to upload your website files again (see FTP details below).
If you need to get your files, for example, if they are no longer on your computer, we may be able to help. Please email surefisheditor@christian-aid.org
What will the new FTP host be?
Your FTP server address is ftp.surefish.co.uk.
What is my login username and password?
Your username with be in the format firstname.lastname and is the same as your primary email on this account (e.g. firstname.lastname2@surefish.co.uk - which is not necessarily the same as the email address you are using).
Please note: Do not enter your own first name followed by your last name if this is not the same as your primary email on this account.
If you need your password, please call visit the self service portal or call 0870 60 70 585 and select option 3 or email surefisheditor@christian-aid.org
What is web forwarding?
You may already have a website if so web forwarding allows us to 'forward' your domain name to a particular site hosted elsewhere on the internet i.e. freespace.
Example:
http://www.yourdomainname.com
forwards to: http://myspace.surefish.co.uk/~firstname.lastname
All web forwarding is masked in a frameset, so only the domain you registered appears in the address bar and not the address you are forwarding to, therefore not allowing the user to know they have been forwarded.
Many companies offer domain names including Low Cost Names and So Internet (Christian Technology).
How do I upload my website to the new server?
As before you will need to use an FTP client or program such as Dreamweaver and enter your username, password and the FTP host, which is below.
What programs can I use to upload files?
There are a number of programs, such as WS_FTP Pro and Cute FTP, which transfer the files of your website from your computer onto ours. These have nothing to do with surefish or Christian Aid so please use the respective websites and help departments of your program in case of query.
How can I find out more about HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language, the language that all websites use)?
Are there any programs that can design my website for me?
Yes. You can find a number of programs, some of which are free, called a WYSIWYG - What You See Is What You Get. These types of programs allow you to lay out text and images and then publishes your layout to your webspace. Try a Google search for WYSIWYG as there are many different types available.
Will I be able to use CGI scripts as before?
No. Because of security issues which have included hackers using CGI scripts to send unsolicited emails, or spam, to surefish users, we can no longer offer the mail form and counter scripts.
Free counters are readily available on the internet, and a search on Google for free website counters will offer many different free to use counters, which normally only need a simple registration.
Mail Forms, for guest books and web-based responses from your websites, are for the above reason, now a paid for service. One mail form program which has been recommended by Andy Jackson, one of the editors of surefish, is available http://www.formmail.com/ .
Other sites that offer similar services are here.
Many other types of remotely hosted scripts are listed here
How much web space will I have?
10Mb
How many files can I have on my site at any one time?
100
Please note that we can only help with technical issues relating to the storage of files on our servers. We cannot offer technical advice about the uploading of websites or issues relating to software programs.
